CARTAGRA

A retired detective’s quiet train ride to Zushi becomes the opening move in a brutal postwar mystery shaped by grief, obsession, and old wounds. Set in Showa-era Japan, CARTAGRA follows Takashiro Shugo as he investigates the disappearance of a wealthy family’s daughter at the request of a former superior. The case turns personal when Shugo meets a woman bearing an unsettling resemblance to the twin sister of someone he once loved, while a separate serial murder investigation in Ueno begins to overlap with the missing-person case. Its mood is deliberately somber and intimate, favoring psychological unease, period detail, and slowly mounting dread over cheap shocks.

Most of the playtime centers on reading dialogue, studying the shifting relationships around the Kozuki family, and making decisions at key narrative crossroads. Choices send Shugo down different routes and determine who survives, what truths are uncovered, and which of the game’s multiple endings you reach. Rather than treating branching paths as a superficial morality system, the story uses them to expose conflicting perspectives and make the player question whether Shugo’s memories and instincts can be trusted. The remastered edition presents the novel in HD, includes the additional “Sacrament” epilogue, and offers English or Simplified Chinese text alongside the original Japanese voice performances; Steam Deck and touchscreen play are also supported.

What separates CARTAGRA from many mystery visual novels is its willingness to let its investigations feel emotionally ugly and morally uncertain. Innocent Grey’s character artwork and restrained presentation give the setting a mournful, almost theatrical weight, while the connected cases reward careful attention across repeat playthroughs. Fans of Kara no Shojo, Higurashi, or darker detective fiction will find a patient but compelling predecessor here, especially if they value atmosphere and route-based revelations over fast-paced interaction. Newcomers should expect disturbing subject matter and a deliberately measured pace, but genre veterans looking for a layered crime tragedy have plenty to unravel.
